Irene Fletemeyer was born in Calbayog City, Samar, Republic of the Philippines. At the age of 12, Irene was adopted by John and Mary Anne Fletemeyer. At the age of 13, Irene began competing as a competitive race walker representing the Maryland Titans Track Club.
Irene was successful every year til graduating from high school, placing in 11 National Level race walking events.
The “Irene Fletemeyer Race Walk Challenge” is a Scholarship Grant offer that will be awarded to the first female high school athlete who is
a resident of Maryland who breaks each of the following personal bests achieved by Irene Fletemeyer while a high school athlete.
This Scholarship Grant is funded and administrated by Potomac Valley Athletics Foundation. This is a one time grant offer of $2,000 for breaking each of the above records. It is open only to high school age girls, age 14 to 19 yo. Athletes must be Maryland residents enrolled in a high school or a prep school program at the time a qualifying mark is set. Marks will be accepted up to July 5 of the year of high school graduation. Athletes must be 18 yo on September 30 of their senior year preceding the year of their graduation from high school.
In case a record is broken by two or more athletes who are Maryland residents at the same event on the same date or two events on the same date, the grant will be increased to $3,000 and divided evenly ($1,500) between the two athletes with the two best times.
Marks will be accepted only from official Race Walking events adhering to official USATF and NFHS rules and standards for race walking events, overseen and judge by trained and certified race walking judges and officials. Events are to be held on accepted tracks and certified courses. This grant challenge will remain in effect until all three records are broken.
